It’s a simple fact that you can’t have a serious discussion about dance music without mentioning Laurent Garnier. Born in France, he began DJing in Manchester in the late 80s and became a prime mover at the Hacienda club and the diverse tracks he played there were a major influence on the likes of the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays.

In the early nineties he began a second career as a producer, which brings us nicely around to this compilation. Spanning two CDs, Retrospective brings together Garnier’s best work from the last twelve years.

His music proves to be as eclectic as the records he DJs, spanning more genres of dance than you could fit in your hand, as well as other bits and pieces from all around the music world, including a healthy amount of jazz.

This is not just a compilation of one man’s work but a focal point of inspiration and influence for many dance producers and musicians over the last decade and beyond. Laurent Garnier is a man you need to take more than a fleeting interest in.
