Born On The 24th Of July, Webster's first album under his given name, takes in many influences from his varied tastes and inspired by the songwriting of such esteemed American songwriters as Rickie Lee Jones, Natalie Merchant, and Marvin Gaye. Whereas Charles’ Presence project was a collection of tracks strung together as an album, Born on the 24th of July was conceived and written primarily from a proper songwriting perspective. "I’m not inspired by modern (music), electronica – I find a lot of my inspiration comes from old stuff," states Charles.

"I write my music around a few chords, more like a traditional songwriter, rather than just turning the machines on and seeing what comes out." A deeply personal album rich with emotional subtleties, the album sees the long time House producer step out from behind his many pseudonyms, creating a very unique fusion of technological textures, organic instrumentation, and songwriting sensibility that sits somewhere between Blue Lines-era Massive Attack, a soulful version of This Mortal Coil, and Ultramarine’s 1992 album Every Man And Woman Is A Star.

Having co-written all the lyrics for Born… in collaboration with Del st Joseph, Steve Edwards, Lisa Lindley-Jones and Massive Attack vocalist Sara Jay on the album’s ten songs, Charles Webster has taken the next step forward towards pushing electronic music to a new level. Like contemporary and good friend Matthew Herbert, Charles is proving that electronic music truly has a heart and a soul.

Charles Webster - Remixed On The 24th Of July

Label: Peacefrog Records
Catalog#: PFG037CD

Country: UK
Released: 25 Nov 2003
Genre: Electronic
Style: Downtempo, Deep House

Tracklist:
01. Put Your Hurt Aside (Dub & Space Mix)
02. I'm Falling (Paris Bordeaux Remix)
03. I Understand You (Ian O'Brien Mix)
04. Forget The Past (Brennan Green & Daniel Wang Remix)
05. Your Life (Presence Dub)
06. Fox Soup (Magnolia Soup Mix)
07. The Gift Of Freedom (High Skies Remix)
08. Be No-One (Jimpster Remix)
09. Ready (Herberts Steady Dub)
10. Sweet Butterfly (Flight Of The Butterfly Mix)

After the recent platinum pressing but highly limited 12" here comes the full Charles Webster remix experience and it's mostly killer. Check the key lineup : Detroit Escalator Co, Pépé Braddock, Ian O'Brien, Daniel Wang/Brennan Green, Matthew Herbert and Theo Parrish. Neil Oliveira starts things off by taking 'Put Your Hurt Aside' into a supreme ambient jazztronica setting. Pépé Braddock drops a heavy bass kick drum and lowdown synth rub workout to 'I'm Falling', awesome thugged out soul house, deeper than the rest by miles..... Ian O'Brien's ten minute workout over 'I Understand You' works fine with rhythmic drum programming and all that jazz, only the smooth styled guitar plucks take the edge off this mix. Herbert skanks up 'Ready', heavy slow-mo dub house with cut up vocals - tune. The final highlight (of course) comes from Theo Parrish who twists up 'Sweet Butterfly', repeating the key chorus line, adding alien synth lines, heavy basscone busting beats, minimal live percussion and hazy clouds of static. Extra mixes come from Jimpster, United Future Organization, High Skies and Presence. Recommended.

Ott - Skylon

Label: Twisted Records
Catalog#: TWSCD33
Format: CD, Album
Country: UK
Released: 25 January 2008
Genre: Electronic
Style: Dub, Experimental, Ambient

Tracklist:

01. From Trunch to Stormness

03. Rogue Bagel
04. Daisies and Rubies
05. Signals from Bob
06. 382 Seaside
07. Roflcopter
08. A Shower of Sparks

After 5 years of hiding in the west-country since his last album, musical oddity Ott gives Twisted Records his second solo offering under the name 'Skylon'. In the last 5 years, the improvements in software and hardware have given maestro's like Ott even more scope to toy with and more quality in the results. A fresh bag of ricks you might say! You can expect unique modern electro-acoustic dubs with generous spatterings of indigenous sounds from around the world ladled into the mix. But thats not all, there are a few tracks straying beautifully into different genres whilst maintaining the laid back but up beat dub vibe that we know and love. Add that to the usual mind-blowing production, arrangement, song writing skills and jaw-dropping effects combos and you've got a sonic feast emanating from your speakers. His use of melody is perfectly balanced between too much and too little, creating a saturated but not overwhelming wall of emotive sound. We've said it before and we'll say it again, the man is a genius.

Ott is no stranger to the studio, he has produced, arranged and recorded for world famous artists including Sinead O'Connor, The Orb, and Brian Eno. Working in a wide range of the best studios in the UK from Butterfly Studios, SARM East and West, Real World, and Ridge Farm to Foel in Wales. He has been interviewed in the producers/engineers bible Sound on Sound for his studio wits and wisdoms. Highly regarded by music moguls such as Greg Hunter, Simon Posford, Martin Youth Glover and many more, this second album from him will merely reinforce his status as a leader in art of modern music.

His debut album Blumenkraft was a huge success and spawned a massive following amongst listeners and producers alike. Skylon will undoubtedly gather more fans worldwide.

As one of the main characters of Plastic City’s catalogue he consistently followed his path of creating and developing his unique, extraordinary style. Highly addictive grooves and elements of house, techno, jazz, downtempo and even breakbeat melt together and thus you can never expect a certain category of sound – but there’s an important ingredient for all of his works: Emotion! From early beginnings until the present Terry’s musical ideas had great impact on what we now call “techhouse”. As a pioneer and central player of the techhouse scene he succeeded in getting and remaining one of the most requested producers and DJs worldwide. Especially in the U.S.A. and Great Britain he established himself as archetype for nearly every following production or name in this division. After long nights at the studio and countless appearances at the most sought-after locations of the planet he appears with state-of-the-art productions which are more than beats, bass, groove and synths: According to his multi-faceted perspective and style he is just doing the music as he feels when being at the studio.

You cannot judge this exceptional piece of music as aiming at a certain use. All tracks are connected to each other and are best suited for dancefloor use – nevertheless it’s pure listening pleasure you can enjoy nearly anywhere you are. Mysterious atmospheres are crossed by deep grooves – tasty melodic bits and wide effects garnish a delicious menu – gourmet guarantee!

Matthias Tanzmann - Restless [Moon Harbour Recordings]

Matthias Tanzmann - Restless

Label: Moon Harbour Recordings
Catalog#: MHRCD 006
Format: CD, Album, Mixed
Country: Germany
Released: 22 Feb 2008
Genre: Electronic
Style: Minimal, Tech House

Tracklist:

01. Swim
02. Flight Mode
03. Kutaisi
04. Redirected
05. Keep On
06. Procon
07. Crazy Circus
08. Bulldozer
09. Nip Slip
10. Rugby
11. Hotel Sapporo
12. Love-Shaped Feeling
13. Still Like It Like That

It’s been seven years now since Matthias Tanzmann teamed up with Daniel Scholz under the Gamat 3000 umbrella and released the ‘All Seasons’ album on Dessous Recordings. Back then this relaxed deephouse understatement was the flavor of the month. Now Matthias Tanzmann presents the grown up, world-travelled solo debut album ‘Restless’. Not just the album title, but also track names like Keep On, Flight Mode or Redirected reflect a packed international DJ booking schedule over the last few years.

Since 2007 he has been resident at Circoloco at DC10 (Ibiza) and part of their world tour. Rounded off with residencies at Distillery (Leipzig), Monza (Frankfurt), Flokati (Munich) and Le Club (Valencia), it is fair to say that Matthias Tanzmann has never played as many international gigs as in the last year.

Musically he has developed significantly over these seven years. Fully committed to deephouse in the beginning, his tracks and sets have become more functional over time. His 12” release ‘Bulldozer’ (MHR022) is a prime example of a captivating bridge built between house and techno, without getting lost in anything considered half-baked Minimal.

‘Restless’ opens a new door for Matthias Tanzmann’s music, and new influences are abound in many of the album tracks. With a distinctive love of percussion as a key new element, he often uses percussive sounds as the hook line of his tracks. Check Rugby, Keep On or Crazy Circus for example. The focus of these tracks, more than ever before in Tanzmann’s productions, is mainly on rhythm and groove. The collected experience of a seasoned world-class DJ is perfectly reflected. All titles of ‘Restless’ have their own place in the time span of an imaginary club night, from a relaxed start-up mood, to prime time action, to hypnotic fade-outs in the early morning.

The previously released teaser 12” Rugby (MHR033) features a special edit of the track and a Mathias Kaden remix – both extremely well received. The original of Rugby, available on the album, is currently being thrashed by the likes of Josh Wink, Karotte, Raresh and 2000 And One. Last but not least, Pokerflat’s Steve Bug selected Keep On for his current Fabric mix CD.

The CD version of ‘Restless’ comes mixed, of course, by Matthias Tanzmann. Alongside the new album tracks you will find other Tanzmann production classics like Bulldozer, Nip Slip, Procon and Still Like It Like That.

This Side Music - This Side Down

For those who didn't have the opportunity to get the introduction to this really promising netlabel founded by two good friends of mine down here in Greece, please do read the following short description of the label:

The label is all about expressing the ongoing need to release material, from talented local & international artists, that would possibly never find a way to getting published. The sound is electronic; definitely. The tempo varies. All good things thrown in. This Side Music has two divisions. Up & Down. This Side Up will host sounds created with the dancefloor in mind. It may be tech house, electro, techno, deep house, breakbeat or whatever sounds interesting to our ears. This Side Down will be the playground for more quirky, off-beat, imaginative or moody sounds. Dub, electronica, idm, ambient and even oriental sl-eazy listening are the tastes we are after, aiming to present the most interesting of a repertoire.

04. Transition Part 4

Hands together for Dimitri Barnias, a.k.a. DOK, who has taken a 90 degrees positive music turn with his new release, Buzz. Forget subliminal soundscapes and artificial ambiences found in his previous works. Here is an undercover head-buzz of down tempo minimal techno, injected with a mixed shot of IDM and Dub. True, the sound here is definitely unique. The groove's beats are large and it sounds like each note has been placed carefully on the grid rather than simply automated by a step sequencer, the bass lines (where available) are simple but rock solid, while TV-style chopped-up vocal lines add a magic touch for this charming, rhythmic soundscape. From 'Buzz' highlights are difficult to pick. Transitions one to three sound like they belong to the same league with small tempo variations. The groove is soulful, soft and at the same time confident and strong. The spoken samples lose their actual meaning and become a rather interesting sound toy in the composition, while the percussion samples drop deep into the sonicspace. All three first tracks are blending comfortably with each other, somehow like they complete one another. The last track, Transition Part 4 (OA535) is probably a favorite and follows a slightly different music direction. The groove remains strong and after two difficult minutes of introduction, a progressive blast of Reaktor-style resonated sequencers and overdriven electric guitars promising music peaks and dips of endless quality. The whole release is nicely produced and if you came to this dance-electronica party late, we couldn't recommend a better entry point to start.
